In the 1960’s, when the Beatles triumphantly conquered the
world, vinyl records, BIG ONES (LP´s) as well as small ones (Singles
and EP´s) were published in an incredible 58(!) nations around the
world, including such unusual places as Kenya, India and Singapor
They were often available with different sleeves and song-
compilations than the British originals. At that time, about 40 years
ago today, when SGT. PEPPER told the band to play, it was mostly
left to the local affiliates of their record company, as to how and in
which design they would choose to present the music of the fabulous
four to their fans in the respective countries. An unbelievable variety
of releases was the outcome.
For the first time ever – and after years of research - German Author
Christoph Maus has succeeded in putting together a world
discography, chronicling each and every original release by the
group, country by country, right from their humble beginnings in 1961
(as backing-band for singer Tony Sheridan) through to their demise
in 1970. The two books BEATLES WORLDWIDE I(An Anthology of
original LP releases) and BEATLES WORLDWIDE II (An Anthology
of original Singles & EP releases) are the results of his work.
Both volumes include colour images of almost all the different
sleeves and labels (more than 2100 in total!) and, with a little help of
a wealth of background information, the magnificent story is told of
how a “Pop” phenomenon, which took not only millions of fans, but
also the record industry completely by surprise, was marketed all
those years ago.
